Our Story

The story of Sashwa is one of dreams, co-creation, and a pioneering vision.

Our journey began with two people united by a profound passion for the African wilderness and a vision to redefine safari experiences. Driven by a deep love for nature and a commitment to conservation, they embarked on creating a retreat where guests could fully immerse in the transformative power of the wilderness.

“We dreamed of a sanctuary where guests could experience the same profound impact and healing that the African wilderness has bestowed upon us.”

At the heart of this vision was a sustainable profit model to support Koru Camp, a non-profit community education initiative within the reserve. This blend of sustainability and a desire to foster deep connections with the wilderness inspired the creation of Sashwa.

Every detail at Sashwa has been crafted with care to reflect our commitment to providing an unforgettable experience. We invite you to experience the love and soul woven into the fabric of Sashwa and find inspiration, healing, and transformation during your time with us in the African wilderness.

MVUU Game Reserve

Our home is Mvuu Game Reserve, a private game reserve in the Greater Kruger Park bordering the Olifants River. Purchased by Peter Eastwood, founder of Koru Camp, in 2020, the intention was to transform the land from a hunting concession into a protected haven for wildlife and a location for Koru Camp. Within a year, the land revived, and wildlife returned.

Mvuu Game Reserve is part of the Greater Kruger biosphere with open fences to Kruger National Park. Wildlife roams freely across this vast space which covers over 2 million hectares, moving through our reserve as they please, offering a truly wild and authentic safari experience.

Meet Peter and Adele

Though they come from diverse backgrounds, Peter and Adele’s shared passion for the African wilderness brought them together. It all began with a business trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park and continued with a 7-month overlanding adventure through Sub-Saharan Africa, exploring remote wilderness destinations. When not on a nature adventure, they reside in their bushveld home in Greater Kruger and can often be found at Sashwa remaining intimately involved in the vision.

Peter Eastwood, from New Zealand and currently residing in South Africa, sold his international company and dedicated himself to conservation work, following his dream of creating a community education eco-camp where disadvantaged youth from local rural communities could connect with their heritage and learn about conservation. Koru Camp has since welcomed over a thousand community members, and Peter aims to establish at least 20 more across Southern Africa. His commitment to conservation and sustainability influences Sashwa’s operations, including our plant-based kitchen and fully off the grid facilities.

Adele, originally from Cape Town, has had a career in the travel industry, running her own business focused on bespoke ‘Retreat to Africa’ experiences. When the opportunity for Sashwa arose, her creativity flourished and a lifelong dream was fulfilled. Her holistic values and creative vision shape the wellness and retreat offerings at Sashwa, as well as the interior design and curated transformative experiences.

Together, Peter and Adele’s passion for wildlife and dedication to making a positive impact form the heart of Sashwa’s unique offering in the Greater Kruger region.

Our Vision for the Future

River of Stars
“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”
- Albert Einstein

Our vision for the future encompasses three intimately intertwined pillars: empowering local communities, conservation and sustainability, and fostering meaningful connection and transformational nature-led experiences for people in the African wilderness. This unwavering vision guides our every decision and action, with our core value being Nature-first. We believe Mother Nature is sentient, and every choice we make centers around putting her first.

By reconnecting people with nature, we believe positive change can be enacted. As we reconnect with the natural world, we are empowered to craft a better world for ourselves and humanity. We are inspired to protect our beautiful planet, rediscover our innate purpose, and find true harmony. Imagine a world where we all return to this place of connection with nature. How different would it be?
