Conscious Travel in Action: The Sashwa Safari Experience

Travelling consciously has become more than just a trend – it’s a shift in values. As conscious travel gains momentum, we are becoming more aware of our impact on the world. Many travellers seek out experiences that align with their ethics, leaving a positive legacy. But in a world full of buzzwords, from “eco-friendly” to “sustainable,” how can we tell what really makes a difference?

The Story Behind Sashwa

The idea of regenerative travel is rooted in our very beginning. Long before Sashwa took shape, our journey started with Koru Camp – a nonprofit initiative created to empower local communities through immersive, educational experiences in nature. When the chance came to transform an existing lodge on the reserve, we saw an opportunity to deepen our impact.

Sashwa was founded not only as a wellness and safari retreat, but as a social enterprise. Our purpose? To use our profits to sustainably fund and support the work of Koru Camp. Today, Koru Camp continues to thrive within our private nature reserve as an off-grid, tented safari camp dedicated exclusively to disadvantaged communities living around Kruger National Park.

Local communities benefitting from conscious travel

Despite spending their lives just a stone’s throw from one of the world’s most celebrated protected areas, many people from these communities have never set foot inside. Poverty, historical exclusion, and lack of access have kept them from experiencing the very wilderness their ancestors once walked and lived alongside in harmony.

Without the chance to develop a love for the natural world, these communities are left vulnerable to the pull of wildlife crime and other threats to conservation. That’s where Koru Camp – and Sashwa – come in.

When you stay at Sashwa, you’re choosing more than just a tranquil escape. You’re helping fund sponsored wilderness camps for underserved communities, inspiring curiosity, confidence, and a sense of belonging in nature. Through these transformative experiences, we aim to plant seeds of long-term conservation awareness and pride in our natural heritage.

Conscious Travel Without Compromise

And yet, despite choosing an ethical safari rooted in responsible travel, nothing about your experience feels heavy. Beginning the moment of arrival, you are welcomed into a space of stillness, connection, and gentle transformation – from yoga on the river deck to the quiet awe of watching elephants roam past on safari. The impact flows naturally: plant-based meals made with ingredients from our on-site Abundance Garden, a local team with deep roots in the region, and our intrinsic partnership with Koru Camp.

In a travel landscape often dominated by luxury for luxury’s sake, we believe conscious travel looks a little different. It’s not about giving things up – it’s about gaining something deeper: a sense of purpose, presence, and connection to place.

So, what does conscious travel look like on safari? It looks a lot like Sashwa: rooted, intentional, and quietly powerful.
