The Wild Within: How Nature Deepens the Practice of Yoga
There’s something profound that happens when you take your yoga mat outside. The sounds of birdsong, the warmth of the sun, the rustle of wind through tall grass – these natural elements become part of the practice, inviting you to slow down, tune in, and reconnect. At Sashwa, nestled along the banks of the Olifants River, yoga becomes more than movement – it becomes a journey inward, supported by the rhythm of the wild.

Nature as a Teacher: How Outdoor Yoga Retreats Help You Reconnect
“Nature itself is such a beautiful teacher,” says Stacey Eastwood, experienced yogi and facilitator of our upcoming, fully-booked Into the Wild retreat. “The bush reminds us that we are a part of nature. It helps us soften and connect more deeply with the natural rhythms of life.”
In traditional studios, yoga is often accompanied by curated playlists and artificial lighting. But here in the Greater Kruger, South Africa, the soundtrack is the call of hornbills, the splashing of hippos, and – if you’re lucky – the deep rumble of elephants. As Stacey shares, “Elephants wandered past during my practice once and just stood there watching. They’re such incredible creatures, it felt so special to connect with them and notice their curiosity. A raw and grounding moment.”
Practising yoga in nature invites us to come back to ourselves. The external world softens, and with it, so do we. According to Kristi Tate, who will be co-hosting the Zen in the Wild retreat in May 2026, this shift is almost immediate: “You start to see guests moving slower, breathing deeper, and becoming more intentional. Their energy softens. You can see it in their bodies – less jaw clenching, less tension, more ease.”
“After leaving Sashwa, many guests leave with a deeper understanding that we are all connected — and that their thoughts, actions, words, and decisions have a ripple effect long after their retreat has ended.”
A Nervous System Reset: Calming Mind and Body Through Yoga in Nature
The environment itself seems to mirror the transformation happening within. Days unfold at nature’s pace. Early mornings with the sunrise, midday stillness, evenings under starlit skies. Guests naturally sync with these rhythms, and their nervous systems respond in kind. As Stacey describes it, “It’s a full nervous system reset. People talk slower, laugh more, and connect more deeply. They sleep better, too.”
And it’s not just the physical postures. Yoga in the bush offers space for breathwork, meditation, journaling, and deep introspection. Tools that, as Stacey puts it, “should be taught in schools – they’re game changers to help recalibrate our nervous systems in times of stress.”
Emotional Release on the Mat: Healing and Freedom in Wilderness Yoga
Both Kristi and Stacey have noticed how nature creates a safe space for emotional release. “I see guests get quite emotional on the mat,” says Kristi. “It’s as though they finally feel safe enough to let their guard down and be with every part of themselves – the joyful moments and the painful ones.”
We often speak about how travel can be transformative. But, when you combine it with intentional practice and the healing power of the wild, something truly magical happens. You don’t just see the landscape; you feel yourself become part of it.
“We are made of the same elements as nature,” Kristi reminds us. “So to practise in it is like a direct portal to our natural state. Like coming home.”
